Find a box where only one empty cell is left that a five is allowed into, and you have placed it with certainty. Work through the grid this way, one number at a time. On an easy puzzle, this alone will fill in a surprising amount.
Technique two, the last empty cell
Whenever a row, column, or box has just one empty square left, the missing number is simply whatever is not already there. These are free placements, and they tend to open up as the grid fills, so keep circling back to look for them.
