What Is a Nurikabe Puzzle? A Beginner’s Guide to This Japanese Logic Game
If you’ve mastered Sudoku and you’re looking for something fresh, Nurikabe might be exactly what you need. It’s a Japanese logic puzzle that’s been popular in puzzle circles for decades but hasn’t hit the mainstream yet — which means if you try it now, you’re ahead of the curve.
What Is Nurikabe?
Nurikabe is a binary determination puzzle played on a grid. Each puzzle starts with a grid containing a few numbered cells. Your job is to determine which cells are “island” (white) and which cells are “sea” (shaded) based on three simple rules.
The Three Rules
Rule 1: Each numbered cell is part of an island. The number tells you how many cells that island contains.
Rule 2: Each island must contain exactly one numbered cell and must be the exact size indicated by that number.
Rule 3: All sea cells must be connected to each other (forming one continuous body of water), and no 2×2 square of cells can all be sea.
How to Solve
Start by looking at the numbered cells. A cell with the number 1 is an island all by itself — shade everything around it. Larger numbers need room to expand, so think about where their islands can grow without touching other islands.
The no-2×2-sea rule is your best friend. If shading a cell would create a 2×2 block of sea, that cell must be an island.
Work from what you know outward. Each decision gives you information for the next decision.
